12th Anniversary

Our dreams are only big enough when they include a miracle …” -unknown

Twelve years ago today, we never dreamed this paradise!   Each Anniversary - we smile and say five years from now... - each milestone surpasses the last. We thank God for that and each other.

Got Milk?! Milk the Moment North Carolina

We were recently invited to the "Got Milk?" initiative "Milk the Moment!" Healthy eating and activity habits for children.

The "Food Revolution's Jamie Oliver!" would be proud!

We had a wonderful time seeing our "Got Milk?" friends again. Katie you were missed this year. However, we are proud of "Got Milk?" and you that you were on assignment right here in Wilmington, North Carolina to encourage and award local schools for keeping healthy living options available for school children!

North Carolina believes in "Fresh Foods NOT French Fries!" And the Got Milk? Campaign supports that with their award for schools making a difference.

At any rate, here we are at the "Milk the Moment!" with our boys taking the challenge and thankfully, far succeeding, at the calisthenics. It was super fun. I loved that the Tigers had so much fun.

Not that anyone asked for my opinion, but since it's my blog, I'll go ahead with how awful I think it is that the schools are selling coca-colas, sodas of any and many varieties to the children! And they sell ice cream, cookies, chips, on any given lunch hour to the elementary school children. Sad. Moms we have to set the pace and make a difference. Call it what it is. And the more we educate our children and offer than healthy and whole foods the more they will chose them.

You can check out the Got Milk? 's Craft Corral for recycling. Do you recycle? Those trusty milk jugs and milk cartons can be used for many cool things and that helps our planet. Eating well, living well and recycling well = make the world a better place. Thanks Got Milk? for leading the charge.

Again this year, we were enthused about "Got Milk? encouraging the children to drink milk, eat a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables and to be fit. We love this campaign.

Thanks Michel! We all had a blast and are super charged for good things like "Milk the Moment!"

Is all of this overwhelming for you? We all start somewhere. Think of one thing you can do this week. What changes will you make for your family? Feel free to share in the comments or email me if you have questions. I've got a great source in Boulder Mountain Man of Eat This, Recycle That.

Real Summer Daz and More 'Not me!'

Spending my Summer daz with two Tigers...

It's a full, fun adventursome and busy time. It is busy here. One Tiger is on the way to basketball camp and the other and I get to go to Barnes and Noble and for some running and rowing. You know, my "usual activities" - pun intended. :) My summer schedule just may be posting in the afternoons. Talk soon and in the words of our friend Tigger... "TTFN - Ta Ta For Now!"

Keeping it real. What does your schedule look like? :)

Not Me! I did not just let the Tigers eat Popsicles along with their chopped Apples. Not me!

And I did not just take a photo of my cute son calling his brother just minutes after we dropped him at his individual time basketball camp - while I was driving! No, Not Me! Because I did not want to miss this moment. [Fortunately, we were safe on the rode and no more pictures while driving.]

What have you "Not me!" done! All the Best!

Capturing The Moments

Yes, I spend my days doing this? Capturing the Moments of the Cherubs, my Tigers.

Chasing these two, taking pictures of these two in a.c.t.i.o.n above which is all the time! I love it. It is so worth my day to come home or be right here at home and get pictures like these.

Mountain Man and I feel like we have heaven running around our back yard with Tonka trucks. Right! I seriously mean that.

Honestly, I am pretty simple, "Faith, Family and Friends." This weekend Mountain Man surprised me and took me to "Confessions of a Shopaholic" which was hilarious (and yes, I get so weary of Hollywood and their token sexual relations i.n. e.v.e.r.y film. Can they get original!)

(This film had very little of that and it was not even appropriate - not that it ever is in the pre-marital area or extra-marital. Mountain Man and I have a pretty high standard of calling this stuff junk and not watching. Which is why you don't find me reviewing tv shows here - because we don't support it. And we have chosen other ways to relax or things to view in the little time we have for it.)

Off my soap box because this post really isn't about watching only G and may a PG (I'm talking for the adults here! Children we're G and Christian media.) Although, what we watch and filtering what goes into our minds and our children's is very important to us.

Nonetheless, one of the quotes in the movie struck a cord with me: The father John Goodman says to daughter, Isla Fisher, "The only thing in this world that defines me is your mother and you." Was that sweet! Then I would definitely add, Jesus Christ. We have a strong sense of faith and family here.

What about you? What defines you?

The Homeschool Hustle and a Winner

Sometimes I think our children are Harvard bound in the second grade. It's 5:33pm and school is still in session, "Mr. G" (Mountain Man to you - who is also the Headmaster of MLA. And the Science and PE guru to the Tigers) is talking atoms and molecules, etc 'arriving at the vicinity of earth, etc.'

The Tigers are listening intently and I stand amazed doing something I usually do that is not near as brilliant sounding - cooking dinner for my family while scheduling the rest of our week, and checking laundry. All of this right before stepping outside of our home briefly to challenge other ladies with seeking the Lord at a very vulnerable time in their lives.

We're all juggling. Right!

This day, I am particularly spinning several plates. I am happy to be involved in welcoming new ladies to our town through a Newcomers Connection at our church. It's a meaningful ministry and yet most nights I wonder why I close the garage door and drive to a ministry across town when God has given me this amazing treasure in earthen vessels right here in my home.

"We have these treasures in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us." 2 Corinthians 4:7

Homeschooling has given me an acute awareness in a very short amount of time that moments matter. Maybe I am sensitive, maybe I am nostalgic. However, God has infused a sense of eternity right here in my mommying, parenting, homeschooling, cooking, cleaning days at home.

Other mothers seem to laugh hysterically at their children and the things they do. Honestly, Mountain Man and I seem to really walk around in awe of this parenting task. How can a gift so great be so overwhelming to possess.

We're by no means idyllic. The Cherubs/My Tigers are not perfect. It's just that parenting in a "living, loving and learning together full-time home" ;) gives me an awareness I never had before our homeschooling decision. We have always been fully engaged parents, or should I say, always attempted to be, and aimed to be.

Our 'assignments aren't all the same.' Though I am happy for mine; I have friends who boldly take their stand in the public school and are forging ahead with what God has for them. Or, my dear friends whose children are in Private and/or Christian schools, they walk a different road.

My challenge: May we be awareness and active in what God has right before our eyes in the assignment He has given each of us.

Believe me, there are days I marvel at the energy and excitement these two carry. Yet, I see myself in the boys. My mother always said, she wished I had a child as talkative, active, silly and dare I say "loud" as I was (my voice has always 'carried' taken after my lawyerDaddy, yet not convenient for a Southern girl.) i.e. Mommy wanted me to have one just like me.

God knows it took two to be just like me and I think of my godly mother - mothering five children and that little girl in the middle had the energy of all five. So most days I can forge ahead - after all mother did.

Each day the Lord has led me to see the overall calling in this life I have been given. Do I get worn out from the never ending need to feed three 'men' in my home, or with the constant hamper of laundry, or reviewing the same flash cards over again? Weary of the sweeping and vacuuming, too ...? You bet!

However, if I have a heart of gratitude and thankfulness, most days are a sheer joy. Most days I feel like I am a part of something much larger than what I can conceive. And underlying I know the hand that rocks the cradle does rule the world. I want to do my part, all of it to the best of my ability each day.

Most days I wake up knowing I have a job more challenging than most CEOs out there. And you know what, I have to smile just thinking "I get to do this!"

May "the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us." 2 Corinthians 4:7

Snow or Shine, Fun Stuff To Do With the Children

UPDATE: :) Got snow! We've got it so we'll actually be sledding today! However, these are cute ideas for the rest for super cold forecast this week. :) Did you get snow?

Sunshine Flower Pot
Barnyard Animals

We're either sledding in the 3-5 inches of snow tomorrow or we're going to really have some distracting fun to take our minds off of a missed snow. How about rounding up supplies for this or these. Arts and crafts are always a big hit with the tigers.

This past week we made aquariums. They were lovely and their imaginations are A+ and second to none. It is amazing the things they can conceive of and actually design and make. It is always fun. I always delight in their creativity.

They have me working on my own 'craft' that will be revealed soon. Any guesses? What are you working on in the last weeks of Winter? Have a great Monday.

New Year Brings Firsts and Lasts

The Tigers are turning, gasp, eight years old next month and it's almost more than Carolina Mama can take in. So as we have embraced 2009 and its new beginnings, I am a be nostalgic at the lasts that I have experienced in the year past.

Here you see the Tigers each with one of their favorite Sesame Street characters. They have really grown. I know when children are infants and in the toddler years, they grow more than any other time. Yet, this year, we have seen a lot of growth and maturity that leads to 'lasts.'

Here this could quite possibly a last Sesame Street Show where they are wide-eyed with wonder. And then lastly, you can see what has been the 'last' twins bathtime together. These fellows are going to be tall like their Grandfather who was 6'5". So I look at these pictures with pause at times gone by, and I attempt to stand still with time for a moment.

What's your Sincerely 'Fro Me To You? Join in the fun.

My Personal Life - Sort Of

I mean I capture the moments really. So when KD of Southern Whimsey asked me to play along with this little tag, I thought perfect for Saturday morning. And then hmmm this will be interesting. After all it isn't every day that you open you your photo album, uncensored, uncropped, etc. and post a picture.

In all reality, I love family pictures, pictures of nature, pictures in general. So I was thrilled to play along. I took a walk on memory lane when I saw what was stored 4th folder, 4th picture. Here we were four years ago. The boys were three.

Did I tell you what an amazing man, Mountain Man is? He graduated with honors with a stay-at-home wife and twin three year olds at home. He's such a blessing and great husband and father.

To my great joy, I found a very funny memory from this summer. I am adding this one, 4th file 4th picture in my photos section. So I have two. Isn't this a riot! It was a summer afternoon when I suggested ice cream. Good Mommy, not so good idea. :) I was thinking how can I go wrong, it never occurred to me that the ice cream would melt quicker than the Tigers would consume it.

What ensued next is something only our twin boys could do, they broke into this hilarious song about the ice cream battle. And there you have it.

If you want to play along, consider yourself 'tagged' this is fun and you do take a look back maybe to 2008 and maybe to a special memory of years gone by.

What's one of your favorite memories? Are you sharing the picture? Have a great Saturday!

Well photos are like the eyes - they are the windows to the soul of our family. Would you agree?

Remembering Our Bisabuela

Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us.
Oscar Wilde

Our Sweet Bisabuela - Tigers' Great Grandmother's birthday. It is our second without her here. Tonight I mentioned it to everyone how today was Bisabuella's birthday. And I said, let's celebrate her by all sharing a memory we have of her.

One of the Tiger A bolted up the stairs. In a flash he was back and he burst out reading a very neatly and lovingly written note card she had sent him in her last years. She lived to be 97 1/2 so it amazes us all how much she did every day.

As my Uncle says, she was "A sign and a wonder!" And we think of her almost daily. She blessed us with memories to last until heaven, enough love for this life and a sweetness and spiritual heritage that cannot be shaken. Family roots and love for a lifetime. We are blessed and thankful.

Here are a couple of pictures from her last visit to see us. She flew from Colorado to visit us just three years before she died. She was 94 1/2. Fortunately, we saw her every six months or so thereafter. So we are thankful we all have plenty of memories with her and particularly that she lived long enough for the boys to really remember her.

See ya soon Bisabuela!

Our Battery Free Christmas!

Hope your Christmas was merry and bright. Ours was, it was just not white. We're okay with that really because we had a 63 degree Christmas. That is nice after a cold front moved through a few days before Christmas Eve.

We went for a family hike/run before 'the big Christmas dinner.' A man from Long Island offered to take our picture and mused "I wonder what they're doing up North." :) He was loving getting to jog in shorts on Christmas Day.

And yes, the Tigers loved their toys. And their parents loved the battery free factor. Mountain Man and I are loving our fruits of a battery free Christmas this year and y'all it has been sooo nice. So without linking up to all the toys we did buy, I'll suffice it to say = the boys are playing, building, creating, reading.... It has been a nice diversion. Ironically, we had all of our batteries stocked this year.

Here are the happy faces of "the Cherubs" on our hike and in their Christmas pajamas - this year Dinosaurs ruled - that is Glow.In.The.Dark Dinosaurs. :) That made for an interesting bedtime. Nothing like gearing them up like glowing jammies when they're already 'seeing Santa and the Reindeer' out their windows.

Let me know what stands out about your Christmas 2008. p.s. another bonus here, it was fun to stay in town this year.

Believing in Santa

The Christmas Season is such a wonderful time of year. We are enjoying everything about it. This year the boys are really enjoying their "Friendship" with Santa. We have an amazing Santa Claus at our favorite local Mall and he made me proud. And he also made me cry. I was more emotional this Christmas visiting Santa than I have been any other year.

The year the Twins were born, their first Christmas, we were in a very small town. We did have a mall -a mall with limited Santa hours. It was a mall also where everyone from far and near drove because they didn't even have a mall with a Santa. So when it came down to priorities of a Twins Mama and our first Christmas - with a husband at the University many hours - managing 'the team" and well, nursing the babes were at the top of the list opposed to standing in long lines waiting....

Fortunately for me, I loved being a mama from the get-go. I even loved being at home with my babies 24/7. Even if it did entail ceasing virtually overnight my coffee breaks, lunch out, shopping sprees after work. The way I saw it was through my Princess Tiara was me holding the babies. I knew in my heart, even in the years of pursuing law school like my Daddy, that the crown of Motherhood would be the next one I would wear and proudly too.

One small thing I missed as one of five children to a mother who did do it all all the time. And yes, she loved it. I mean she made the meals, made the girls dresses, and all and n.e.v.e.r once complained.

Really, I did not know this job was work much the hardest job I would ever do. So when I say the first Christmas mama was taking care of the babies, that's just what I happily was doing. It was only looking back that I realized that most of the other mamas stood in those long lines with their one child or two children with another adult and sat on Santa's lap.

So the next Christmas, we were in Colorado with Mountain Man's family. And guess what, driving down the mountain and to a mall with a Santa and standing in line is not a Colorado Christmas priority. Too bad, I didn't think about 'strong arming' my in-laws into extra helping-hands for the task.

Honestly, it took this first time young mama with two babies at once a while to understand how it works.

Again, that was okay because why stand in line for Santa when there is snow coming down and we as a family could spend our time sledding with our boys and snowshoeing. Blessed memories indeed.

Jumping to yesterday, we made our way to our local mall where Santa sits for ten hours a day. It took a little planning with Mountain Man and there we all were at the feet of our local Santa Claus with the Tigers.

My seven year old boys were all smiles and twinkly eyes at the man who they believes really does shimmy down the roof with their presents.

The line was short, the decorations were lovely and the boys were gleeful with anticipation. I wanted to 'get this right' so I went ahead and arranged it all with the sales lady while we all aimlessly waited for the few children in front of us. She was a patient lady.

My request were that each child have their moment with Santa. Then, the two could together sit on Santa's lap. Of course, photos would be snapped throughout by the photo people and by us.

If you've read here enough, you know I am not a Type A perfectionist - so why this. You see, these two boys will be dare I say eight in February - 8 years old. So next Christmas puts them close to nine. Other moms have advised us to enjoy these Santa Believing years because it does not last for ever. I'm in.

As we waited, I took in the memory. The boys were patient, holding their lists, reviewing them together, and Mountain Man and I caught eyes. Mine were already watering. He knew. He's the one who holds it together for us. Me, well, he holds me up.

Santa was amazing. It was as if he knew. He spend a lot of time with each child, smiling to me/the camera, smiling at my boys, listening and filling them with the best stories a Santa could tell. I mean, who knew that Santa has a mouse for the kids without chimneys - a mouse who opens the door to the house. And for those who do, us, we need to leave only three cookies, one for Santa and one each for the boys to eat Christmas morning because Santa nearly got stuck in the chimney last year eating all those cookies.

We were all pictured out and the boys satisfied and gleeful sensed it was their turn to move on for the next child. I couldn't resist - with tears in my eyes - embracing Santa and whispering in his ear how thankful I was and that I know I may not get this next year. He gave me a squeeze and a wink that said, "We did it and I do believe I'll see you here next year."

Nowhere in my mind had I considered when they will discover the 'real' Santa yet. (Doesn't this go on forever!?) So to consider this as we stood enjoying this very real moment with Santa was almost too much. I am not a person who longs for yesteryear, I just sure well want to enjoy today because it fades quickly.

Even as a Believer, It's a tough concept to consider in the middle of the happiest years of my life. This too will fade away. So I am reminded in my parenting that yes I love them believing in Santa as long as possible. Yet, I want them to believe in the One who lives forever. He who does not fade away.

And then I am going to hold on to these pictures and memories right into the gates of Eternity. Because this year, the 'friendship' with Santa was the best ever for the Twins and me!

Thankful for Tigers

This pictures sums up a lot of the day in the life here. The Tigers playing football. We're enjoying lots of fires in the fireplace. The cord of wood still holds novelty to us. Wood-burning fires, Christmas lights/decorating and Coca-Cola Cake baking. We're taking in the season.

Thanksgiving Week and a Cord of Wood

We're enjoying our Thanksgiving Week! Here's what our day looked like here. Slept late. Drank Verona Starbucks coffee - brewed at home - in pajamas while the Tigers decorated their "Dog Houses." The Tigers helping unload a cord of wood. Making Sugarplum Spice Hot Tea and unwinding with family.

I am thankful for these things.
