Calabash North Carolina Shrimp Recipe

Calabash, NC Shrimp

Now that we're home from the Beach LiveBlogging "Best of Carolina" trip, I wanted to share a very special place.

Check out Calabash, North Carolina. A lovely and legendary fishing village with amazing restaurants. It's quintessential North Carolina greatness.

Today I am missing this and wanted to share it with you here. A version of the famous recipe:

Calabash North Carolina Shrimp Recipe

Ingredients
2 eggs
1 cup whole milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 lbs small shrimp, shelled
Directions
1Beat together eggs and milk.
2Add flour, salt and pepper; stir until smooth.
3Dip shrimp in batter; remove and place in hot oil.
4Fry at 375 degrees until crisp.

This was divine. Our whole family indulged this one time into the 'fried' tastiness. Then it was back to the grilled basics. Actually, I ordered the Grilled Seafood Platter and ate half. It was perfection. Then I ate another 'half' of the Calabash Shrimp! :) Try it and enjoy a little Carolina!

  1. We have a condo at Sandpiper Bay Golf Club (right between Ocean Isle and Sunset on Old Georgetown Road). We go to Calabash often but too bad I'm allergic to shellfish. Calabash Creamery is the BEST!! And St. Nick Nacks provides some great shopping and not just the Christmas shop. I think we're going down this weekend.

  6. It's been many, many years since going to Calabash for their awesome seafood!! When we use to go to Ocean Drive each year when our kids were growing up, we always went to Calabash to eat.

There use to be a place called "Bennett's Seafood" which was the original Bennetts...they knew my parents really well...it's been gone a long time now but was a great place to eat.

    Good memories....

  7. I grew up in Wilmington, just north of Calabash, and this is the only fried shrimp that tastes right to me! I never learned to make it, though (why bother, with so many great restaurants around?)but I could swear that it has white cornmeal (finely ground) in the mix somewhere. Any thoughts?
